The Waste- Solid and liquid – Management is a serious problem both in the urban and rural areas. The health and environmental issues related to waste disposal necessitates technological intervention, professional management and trained labour for safe disposal/recycling. The labour force and the managing officials involved from collection point to the processing unit should have a theoretical and practical back ground about types of waste generated at different sources, its handling, composition, collection strategies, safe disposal/processing for recycling etc. This is essential for healthy and environmentally safe waste management and also for the safety of personnel involved on the work. At present all these operations are attended to by people without any back ground on aspects of waste management. In Kerala no institution is offering a well designed programme to produce trained personnel for waste management. The proposed programme is towards this direction with following objective:
To commence a diploma programme in the Kerala Agricultural University designed to impart knowledge of different types of waste generated and train and equip students on various aspects of healthy and environmentally safe methods of waste segregation, collection, transportation, processing, recycling, disposal etc, to ensure the availability of trained man power for scientific management of all kinds of wastes.
