The International Workshop titled "Climate Resilient Rice for Kerala" successfully concluded on March 7, 2024. Organized by the Department of Plant Physiology, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the workshop brought together a diverse array of experts, researchers, and students to discuss the urgent need for climate-resilient rice varieties in Kerala.
Dr. Roy Stephen, Dean of Faculty at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, inaugurated the workshop with an insightful welcome address. He highlighted the critical need to address climate change impacts on rice production and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in this field.
The workshop gained further prominence with the felicitation ceremony attended by notable figures such as Dr. Anith (ADR, South Zone) and Dr. Faisal (Professor RC). Prof. K.P. Sudheer, Principal Secretary of the Science and Technology Department and Executive Vice President of KSCSTE, presided over the inaugural ceremony. In his address, Prof. Sudheer underscored the importance of scientific research in developing resilient agricultural techniques to counteract climate change effects.
A key highlight of the event was Dr. Jauhar Ali, Principal Scientist and Head of Hybrid Rice Breeding Lead at IRRI. As the Project Leader and Coordinator for Asia and East South Asia - Green Super Rice (GSR) at IRRI, Dr. Ali presented on "Climate resilient rice inbred and hybrid varieties for Kerala," focusing on major rice varieties developed by IRRI, especially the Green Super Rice (GSR), and their adaptability to Kerala's climate.
Dr. M.S. Sheshshayee, Professor and Head of the Department of Crop Physiology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, also graced the event. His session on "Development of aerobic rice varieties using physiological traits" provided insights into creating rice varieties suitable for water-limited areas, addressing the challenges of water scarcity.
A brainstorming session titled "Put Heads Together" followed the presentations. This session saw vibrant discussions and idea exchanges, fostering a community spirit and promoting collaborative research and development in climate-resilient rice production.
As the workshop concluded, Dr. Manju R V, HOD, Dept of Crop Physiology, extended heartfelt thanks to all participants, speakers, and organizers. She stressed the workshop's role in catalyzing joint efforts towards developing sustainable and climate-resilient rice farming practices in Kerala.
